Digital Transformation Strategies and Organizational Resilience in African financial institutions: A systematic literature review

Abstract

The rapid pace of digitalization has significantly transformed the operational and competitive environment of financial institutions across Africa, creating increasing interest in how digital transformation strategies enhance organizational resilience. This study presents a systematic literature review (SLR) of empirical studies examining the relationship between digital transformation strategies and organizational resilience within African financial institutions. Guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework, relevant studies were identified through searches conducted in Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Academia.edu. Studies published between 2017 and 2026 were screened using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, focusing on peer-reviewed empirical articles that examined digital transformation and resilience-related outcomes within the African financial sector. Selected studies were analyzed using thematic synthesis. The findings revealed that digital transformation strategies such as digital banking, mobile banking innovation, fintech integration, ICT adoption, artificial intelligence applications, and digital financial services significantly contribute to organizational resilience by improving operational flexibility, institutional adaptability, customer accessibility, risk management capability, and crisis-response efficiency. The review further showed that digital transformation strengthened the ability of African financial institutions to maintain operational continuity during disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic and increasing technological uncertainty. However, the study also identified persistent challenges including cybersecurity threats, infrastructural limitations, regulatory constraints, and inadequate digital skills, which may hinder the effectiveness of digital transformation efforts. Additionally, important research gaps were identified, particularly the geographical concentration of studies within a few African countries and limited longitudinal and qualitative investigations within the literature. The study contributes to existing knowledge by synthesizing fragmented empirical evidence and providing an integrated understanding of how digital transformation strategies influence organizational resilience in African financial institutions. The study further highlights areas for future research and emphasizes the strategic importance of digital transformation in strengthening resilience and long-term sustainability within Africa’s evolving financial sector
